The police are in a quandary. While in her dying declaration, a 24-year-old homemaker has blamed her husband and in-laws for setting her and her two children ablaze, circumstantial evidences prove otherwise.
In her police statement, Poonam Jore had claimed that following an argument over a trivial issue around 5.30 am on Monday, her husband Pramod had set her ablaze and locked her and her two daughters Pallavi (2) and six-month-old Tanvi at their Anandvan chawl room in Dahisar (East).
But while questioning neighbours, the police found that Pramod, who distributes milk, had left home a couple of hours before the incident took place. “We found that Pramod was out at work as usual that morning,” said an officer investigating the case, on condition of anonymity.
The police have registered a case of murder and dowry harassment against Pramod, his brother Anil and two other family members. “We have arrested them based on her dying declaration,” said Sub-Inspector A. Girkar.
However, during initial investigations, the police found that Anil too was not there at the time of the incident.
Poonam had also alleged that her husband and in-laws suspected her of having an affair and would often demand dowry and beat her up. But the police found that Pramod’s parents, who live in their hometown in Konkan, had not visited the couple for years.
While the police are trying to get to the bottom of case, there is no one to care for the two girls, who are fighting for their lives at Bhagwati Hospital.
