The incident took place around 2.40 pm at Badlapur railway station. The three persons who died have been identified as Sangita Maruti Aainkar, 42, Shivshankar Rambhajan Srivastav, 40, and Dilip Sravan Bhavar, 35.

PI Sampat Nirmal, GRP, Kalyan, said, "For the last 10 years, the railways have been conducting awareness drives among the people on dangerous practices such as railway track crossing, yet people continue to risk their lives every day."

He added that people in Badlapur cross railway tracks at the Vangani end to purchase fish and chicken. This despite the fact that there is a foot overbridge in the area. "We cannot understand why people unnecessarily play with their lives," said PI Sampat Nirmal, investigating officer.
