Normal life was paralysed in Lower Assam on Monday following a 36 hour statewide bandh called by the All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Students' Union (AAKRSU) in demand for creating a separate Kamtapur state.
All business establishments, schools and colleges remained closed while vehicular traffic did not ply on the road. Several long-distance buses and trucks were stranded on National Highway 31, official sources said.

Banks and financial institutions remained shut while attendance in government offices was thin.

Rail traffic, however, was not affected and there was no report of any untoward incident, the sources said.

The bandh affected Lower Assam districts of Kokrajhar, Goalpara and parts of Dhubri but had no impact in other parts of the state, they said.

AAKRSU has also demanded Scheduled Tribe status to the Koch-Rajbongshis of the region.
