The situation has become further grim with as many as 1000 senior medical officers applying for the voluntary retirement in the past one-and-a-half month.

According to the official data, nine out of a total 17 posts of additional directors (AD) health, are lying vacant in UP.

This figure also include the additional director posts in Allahabad division.

Further, 52 out of 105 AD rank posts in UP are also lying vacant.

These additional director rank posts include 24 at Headquarters, six at Nagar Nigam, 40 specialists grade (male), five general grade (female), nine specialist grade (female) and two special secretary posts at the Secretariat.

Moreover, of the total 26,206 sanctioned posts of medical officers in Uttar Pradesh, more than 4,400 are still lying vacant, due to delay in the release of State DPC results.

Out of the total sanctioned posts, 12,446 posts have been reserved for the medical officer (male) and 2002 for medical officer (female).

Also, 10,335 posts have been reserved for reserve duty medical officer (RDMO male) and 1423 for RDMO (female), according to the official figures.

In Allahabad district alone, 60 posts of medical officers are reportedly lying vacant.

To further add to the problem, as many as 1,000 senior medical officers have reportedly applied for the voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) in Uttar Pradesh, indicating that they have become largely disinterested in the government job.

Most of the medical officers were unhappy over the present transfer policy which was formulated keeping in mind the interest of a few selected posts.

The high level sources, however, said that in the coming week, about 1,800 senior medical officers may also go on a long leave due to transfers.

Joint director Dr Nisar Ahmed said the situation could be improved only when the government raises emolument of doctors appointed on contractual basis to fill the vacant posts.

"Practically it is not possible for a super specialist doctor from outside the district, to provide his services at only Rs 12,000 every month. The present situation could be assessed from the fact that only 800 doctors applied for 1200 contractual postings recently advertised in UP," he added.
