4 jawans die in explosion at Pokhran firing range

A mortar burst during a routine shooting practice session at the Pokhran firing range in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district on Monday resulted in the death of four soldiers and injury of three others.

A mortar burst during a routine shooting practice session at the Pokhran firing range in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district on Monday resulted in the death of four soldiers and injury of three others.

Pokhran police station chief Bharatraj said Lance Nayak Mohammad Ishaq was killed on the spot when an 81-inch mortar burst in the Lathi Khetlai area of the Pokhran range, about 570 km west of state capital Jaipur.

The three other heavily injured jawans, who died while being shifting to Jodhpur, are Lance Nayak Kadam Subhash, Nayak Gollappa and soldier Raviraj Vishnu.

The three injured are Lance Nayak V.K. Patil, Nayak Surjeet Singh and Subedar Jairaj. The police had registered a case in this connection, while defence spokesman Lt Col N.N. Joshi said the army had also ordered a court of inquiry into the accident.
