Four unidentified armed persons today looted Rs 40 lakh from General Post Office after tying two persons, including a security guard, here in the wee hours today.
The incident occurred around 4 am, when security guard, Ashok Kumar, of the Post Office heard some noise inside the post-office and before he could spot anybody, he was attacked by some unidentified persons. The four armed men then tied him and another labourer present in the premises. They then went to strong room of the post office and fled with the cash, Superintendent of Police (SP) S K Kalia said.
When contacted, Senior Superintendent of Post (SSP) N R Meena confirmed the incident and said it seems that accused were already in the premises as there was no sign of forced entry into the premises.
"I got the information at around 7 am and accordingly police was informed about the incident," he said, adding that as the cash was to be distributed to other post offices it was kept in a box, outside the main safe, which has been taken by the armed men.
Meanwhile, senior police officials, including Senior Superintendent of Police rushed to the spot.
Services of the special teams, including finger print experts, are being taken to get vital clues of the accused and red alert has been sounded in and around the city to nab them, Kalia said without ruling out the involvement of the employees of the staff of the Post Office.
"We have asked the post office to provide us details of each and every employee, who were on duty last night so that they can be questioned," Kalia said.
