"A total of 440 educational institutions were granted minority status till July 27 this year by the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI)," Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandeswari informed the Lok Sabha.

While 1,396 institutions were given the minority tag last year, the figure was 950 in 2007 and 1,684 in 2006, she said.

No financial assistance is linked to the grant of minority status of educational institutions, she said in a written reply.
