42 pilgrims killed in UP road mishap

At least 42 people were killed on Monday morning after a tractor trolley carrying them fell into waterlogged gorge in Uttar Pradesh's Gauua Par area under Nagua thana in Ballia.

At least 42 people were killed on Monday morning after a tractor trolley carrying them fell into waterlogged gorge in Uttar Pradesh's Gauua Par area under Nagua thana in Ballia.

All the deceased were resident of Ubhava thana, Usmanpur of the district.

The deceased were on their way to Sati Mata Temple in the district. According to reports, the accident occurred around 10 am when driver lost control over the vehicle. The vehicle was carrying around 50 people.

Locals rushed to the spot to rescue people, but could not do much as the gorge was very deep.

District magistrate Madhukar Dwivedi and superintendent of police (SP) Ram Swaroop rushed to the spot. “On the occasion of Janmashtami, a large number of villagers visit the Sati Mai temple located at the Ghazipur border. The tractor trolley was on the way to the temple,” Swaroop said.

However, the driver lost control over the vehicle and tractor slipped into a deep water-filled gorge along the roadside at Gauua Par area, he added.

Till reports last came in about 36 bodies were recovered.

The injured have been admitted to a hospital.
