5 farmers end their lives in Vidarbha

With five more suicides, the figure of total suicides in Vidarbha has now reached 1,011 since June 2005.

Five farmers from Vidarbha region committed suicide in last 24 hours, an NGO working for the cause of farmers has claimed.

The figure of total suicides has now reached 1,011 since June 2005, the NGO Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti claimed in a release on Tuesday.

The farmers have been identified as Pralhad Natthuji Kadu, Belora (Amravati), Rameshwar Pofale, Chinchala (Washim), Hanuman Kale, Sarai (Yavatmal), Mahadeo Lokhande, Satephal (Yavatmal) and Goverdhan Mahalle, Chichgaon (Yavatmal), it said.

The total number of farmers who committed suicide after the announcement of relief package by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has gone upto 401, the release said.

The Samiti has threatened to launch an agitation on October 26 to press for the demand of adequate price to cotton in Vidarbha region.
