55% turnout in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh

While Haryana recorded around 58% voter turnout, it was 55% in Punjab and 45% in Chandigarh, poll department sources said.

An estimated 55 per cent turnout was recorded in Punjab, Haryana and the union territory of Chandigarh where polling was marred by sporadic violence that claimed two lives and allegations of booth capturing.

Jagpal Singh Sohali, who recently joined Parkash Singh Badal's SAD after deserting Simranjit Singh Mann's faction, was shot dead by unidentified persons in Sohali village in Ludhiana constituency while he was going to cast his vote.

A congress worker was stabbed to death in village Gheri in Tarn Taran constituency allegedly by SAD activists following a scuffle between supporters of the two groups.

Incidents of firing were also reported from Kharar in Ropar, Batala in Gurdaspur (Punjab) and Bamla village in Bhiwani (Haryana).

Prithpal Singh, a transporter and SAD supporter, was shot at and injured by unidentified persons at Dabali village in Kharar assembly segment of Ropar constituency.

A father and a son, both Haryana Vikas Party activists, were shot at and injured in Bamla village in Loharu assembly segment of Bhiwani by some unidentified assailants.

Steel magnate and Congress candidate from Kurukshetra Naveen Jindal accused the ruling INLD activists of booth capturing at two places each in Pundri and Pai assembly segments, a charge vehemently denied by the INLD.
