A fast track court in Kottayam has sentenced a man to seven years Rigorous Imprisonment for attempting to murder his neighbour, a local CPI leader six years back.
The court also slapped a fine of Rs 30,000 on him and said he would have to undergo an additional 18 months prisonment if he fails to pay the amount. It ordered him to pay 15,000 from this amount to the CPI leader.
The prosecution case was that Philippose (39), forcibly entered the house of CPI Puthupally committee member MA Appukuttan on April 30, 2003 morning and set his room ablaze by pouring kerosene. When the man rushed out, Philippose flung acid on him. Appukuttan lost his sight and suffered burns on his throat and chest.
Previous enmity was stated to be the reason for the attempt to murder.
