According to a hospital press release, M Nagamuthu (45), a fisherman of Earwadi in Ramanathapuram district, was suffering from a tumour in the back for the last eight months.

The tumour had reached painful proportions and cracks had appeared on the surface following which he was admitted to the Rajaji hospital 20 days ago.

A team led by Dr KV Maheswaran and Dr Rajamanoharan performed the surgery and removed the "42cm X 30cm tumour weighing eight kg" from Nagamuthu's back on Tuesday, the release said.

"The patient is responding positively and improving quickly," the release added.
