Maharashtra, with 16 women out of 210 candidates, would witness the largest number of women candidates in 24 Lok Sabha seats in the first two phases, the poll body said in a statement. As many as 139 of the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies go to the polls Tuesday.
Andhra Pradesh follows with 14 women out of 132 contestants vying in 21 Lok Sabha seats. Chhattisgarh has fielded the third highest number of women - 12 out of a total of 102 people - in the fray for 11 seats.
Gujarat, with 11 women out of 162, and Jharkhand, with seven out of 85
contestants come after Chhattisgarh in that order.
Assam has five, while Bihar, Karnataka and Orissa has four women each trying their luck at the hustings in the first two of a five-phase poll.
One woman each would be in the fray in Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
In the first phase of the elections, there would be no woman representative in Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Daman and Diu.
