These were some of the questions that tested the intelligence of budding engineers on the second day of the on-going national quiz fest— Gnosiomania-2006 at the MP Hall of the Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) on Saturday.

The extravaganza began on Day 2 with the enthralling Auto Quiz hosted by well-known quiz master Bishwabijoy Sen of TCS from Kolkata. The quiz encompassed questions from contemporary global auto industry along with its implications on future Indian auto sector.

Questions on automobile magnates left the audiences spellbound with the audio-visual round providing the finishing touches. Team from IIT-Kharagpur comprising Ravi Handa, Nagesh Ranjan and Saunak Chakrabarti led throughout with a huge margin to eventually bag the first prize while the MNNIT teams came second and third.

Later, the quizmaster expressed happiness over the high standards of performance displayed by the participants.

The afternoon was dedicated to the awe-inspiring sports and entertainment quiz which tested the participants’ knowledge in the fields of cinema, music and sports. Their intellect and memory of various international records of different sports were put to test through several interesting questions. All teams battled to a nail-biting finish while the results were awaited with increased fervor.

Another quiz ‘Bluffmaster’ was held with a novel concept of faking and misrepresenting reality. After an entire day full of mental muscle wrenching the evening brought some respite with the much-applauded Antakshari testing both the vocal and musical knowledge of the students.

It aroused widespread participation with everyone enjoying the light musical evening. After the acid test of mental sharpness, the cultural night was held in late evening.

A late night ‘science and technology quiz’ was also held to for those interested in stretching their medulla oblongata over the latest happenings in the world of science.

Altogether MNNIT witnessed a day full of activity and quizzing with increased participation and enthusiasm, thereby living up to the dreams of all involved in spreading the motto ‘knowledge for all’.

Earlier, on Friday, an open panel discussion on ‘India shinning economically but degrading socially’ aroused deep sentiments from eminent dignitaries like Allahabad University Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajen Harshe who spoke about India’s rich cultural heritage and the recent economic upsurge. Prof AB Samaddar, Director, MNNIT, talked about sustainable development as the key to India’s bright future.

The panel members also replied to a host of queries put up by the audience.

While Harish-Chandra Research Institute director Prof Amitava Raychaudhuri talked about increasing corruption among the masses, chief technologist of ANZ Information Technology Aveek Mukherjee emphasised the financial markets liberalisation as the chief cause of economic development. Senior journalist PK Tiwari expressed concern over the pathetic social matrix.
