A radiologist who pursues art with passion

Art and radiology usually do not get along with each other. But Yogesh Godse, a radiologist by profession, pursues his passion for art with a panache. Godse has the nerve to exhibit his skills as a versatile painter, a sculptor and a scholar in vastu simultaneously. Starting as a sculptor in the beginning, the artistic verve took him on a path less travelled and today he is much famous for his miniature carvings of Lord Ganesh which is exclusively made out of roots of 'madar'.

Godse has the nerve to exhibit his skills as a versatile painter, a sculptor and a scholar in vastu simultaneously.

Starting as a sculptor in the beginning, the artistic verve took him on a path less travelled and today he is much famous for his miniature carvings of Lord Ganesh which is exclusively made out of roots of 'madar'.

"Batuk Shwetark Ganpati is the name of the carving which is considered to be most auspicious as it is carved from the root of white madar which is usually as old as 20 to 25 years. It is to be noted that the root takes the shape of Lord Ganpati naturally which has to be given finishing touches as per the requirement," he added.

Citing the importance of Ganpati, Godse said, it is very auspicious to place Batuk Shwetark Ganpati at home in the Ishan corner as it relieves people of all sufferings. "Every possible care is needed to take out the root and this is done only during 'ravi pushya nakshatra'. I have to perform too many rituals before I set out on my work," he added.

Till now, more than 20 people have benefited from the Ganpati's idols carved by Godse. "The idol carved is of the thumb size of the person who is going to worship it, thus deriving its name Batuk," he said. Single idol costs as much as Rs 5000. He also claimed to have helped his employing company BPCL to overcome the financial crisis through his knowledge in Vastu.

Godse originally belongs to Maharashtra but circumstances landed him in Allahabad where he is pursuing his skills. He nurtured the artistic skills since the tender age of ten years and got an opportunity to study in JJ School of Arts for one year. "Vastu Shastra always interested me and reading more about it has given me enough knowledge to advise people on the subject," he said.

He also makes Sri Yantras and the most famous one carved by him is in bronze which is known as Kachchhap Sri Yantra. Hanging Sri Yantra made by him has been placed in an art gallery in Lucknow. He also makes sculptures in wood, silver etc.

Landscapes and figures of deities find place in the paintings made by him. He was praised by Manohar Joshi, the then CM of Maharashtra, for making a painting exactly defining the significance of Prayag.

The talented artiste has no interest in exhibiting his work. "I hate politics which I had to face recently and so I feel content with my work which I am doing honestly," he said.

He also guides the students in learning various art forms at his home.
