For a party that touts itself as being for the common man, many of the candidates fielded by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) certainly aren’t — financially speaking.

Of the 200 people contesting on an AAP ticket — in the first five phases of the Lok Sabha elections — an astounding 86 have declared assets worth more than a crore, according to a report by the Association for Democratic Rights, a poll watchdog.

Leading the pack is the party’s candidate from Bangalore Central and former Infosys CFO V Balakrishnan with Rs 189 crore.

As comparison, the party has only Rs 25 crore in its kitty and is facing a fund crunch in supporting the nearly 400 candidates fielded by it in the polls.

Others on the list are: whistleblower in Maharsatra’s irrigation scam Anjali Damania (Rs 19 crore), retired general RS Kadyan (Rs 13 crore), actor and activist Gul Panag (Rs 12 crore).

All journalists fielded by AAP made the list. In front, AAP candidate from Ghaziabad and former Star News anchor Shazia Ilmi (Rs 30 crore), followed by Anita Pratap (Rs 20 crore), Ashutosh (Rs 8 crore), Ashsish Khetan (Rs 1 crore) and Jarnail Singh (Rs 1 crore).

The party’s ideologue and chief strategist Yogendra Yadav, contesting from Gurgaon, has declared assets worth Rs 2 crore.
