Julien Absalon of France won the men's cross country mountain bike gold medal on the Parnitha Olympic course at the Athens Olympics on Saturday.
Absalon had a minute to spare at the finish line over Spain's Jose Antonio Hermida with 1996 Atlanta Olympic gold medallist Bart Brentjens of the Netherlands taking the bronze 2:03 behind the winner.
Absalon's winning time was two hours 15 minutes 2 seconds for the 43.4km journey over seven laps.
It was the second French success in the event since its Olympic debut at Atlanta.
Miguel Martinez won the mountain bike gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Belgian Roel Paulissen was fourth with Britain's Liam Killeen fifth.
