THE CITY remained tense the entire day on Wednesday after yesterday’s incident in which several students were injured in a clash during the filing of nomination papers for the students’ union election at Harishchandra Post-graduate Degree College.
Activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and office-bearers of students’ union got classes of Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth (MGKV) and Sampurnanand Sanskrit University suspended and torched effigies to protest Tuesday’s incident.
A large number of students, led by the president of students’ union Satyendra Singh got classes of MGKV suspended and took out a procession on the campus.
The agitated students were demanding action against those responsible for Tuesday’s incident.
Similarly, students of SSU, led by students’ union president, Ramakant Pandey got classes suspended and took out a march on the varsity campus. They were protesting the alleged high-handedness of police over ABVP activists.
However, the Harishchandra Degree College remained closed today. The situation around the college premises remained tense the entire day. A large number of students gathered in Vishweshwar Ganj area and torched the effigy of Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav for the alleged partial attitude of police during Tuesday’s clash.
Dhirendra Pandey, Kamal Prakash Srivastava, Sujit Gautam, Lucky Verma, Ravi Srivastava, Dipak Singh, Arvind Kumar and Atul Kumar Singh were among other student leaders who torched the effigy of the CM and demanded action against those responsible for yesterday’s incident.
Cops were deployed at MGKV, SSU and Harishcnadra Degree College in view of Tuesday’s clash today. Activists of ABVP and Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha clashed with each other during the filing of nomination papers for the students’ union election of Harishcnadra Degree College here on Tuesday.
Several students were injured in the clash. The agitated students damaged several vehicles and shops due to which the police resorted to lathicharge.
It is believed that Tuesday’s clash was a fallout of another clash between two groups of students before the students’ union election of Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth around two months ago. Since then, both the groups were looking for an opportunity to settle scores with their rivals.
Tuesday provided both the groups an opportunity as there were a large number of students accompanying them during filing of nomination papers at Harishchandra Degree College.
Meanwhile Saurabh Kumar Singh, who received serious injuries on Tuesday, was undergoing treatment at a private hospital here today.
