UNION HUMAN Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh had a taste of the student politics of UP at the Lucknow University’s convocation function on Monday. Activists of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) raised slogans ‘Arjun go back’ and waved black flags at the minister when he was about to begin his convocation address.

There was utter chaos at the convocation pandal as cane-waving cops started chasing the ABVP activists who were opposing the minister’s visit for his stand on the minority status of AMU and the alleged tampering with history books. This went on for quite some time forcing the minister to wait patiently to begin his address.

Half-a-dozen ABVP activists sustained injury in this lathicharge and were later taken into custody. To register their protest against the police action, the office bearers of the employees’ union walked out of the pandal and dubbed the function as a “flop show.”

The incident has also exposed the elaborate security arrangements made by the LU and district administration.

While the common students could not get inside the campus because of the security, the troublemakers made their way right up to the pandal. ABVP activists, who had declared it beforehand that they would oppose Singh’s arrival on the campus, alleged that Singh had been fiddling with facts in the history books and his stand on Aligarh Muslim University issue was not acceptable.

They raised slogans like “Arjun Singh go back,” “Arjun Singh Murdabad,” “Wapas jao, wapas jao” and showed black flags to him. Singh saw all this helplessly while standing on the dais.

Police caught hold of six activists and mercilessly thrashed them inside the pandal. This drama continued for about 10 minutes following which Singh was able to deliver his speech.

In his speech, Singh said he was “pained” to see all this but did not say anything further. He called upon the youth to contribute to the all round development of the country. “India and especially UP is the land of god and goddesses. Also, the youth must draw inspiration from great leaders like Nehru, Ram Manohar Lohiya and Acharya Narendra Dev,” he said.

Earlier in the day, agitated ABVP activists raised slogans against Singh because the police did not let them go inside the pandal. Situation got worse when LUSU general secretary Vinod Tripathi came in. Both Tripathi and ABVP activists, including SP student leader Ram Singh Rana, entered into a heated argument following which police applied mild canecharge to disperse the crowd.
