Action man Gupta returns with Zinda
Sanjay Gupta returns with his "darkest film" ever, writes Diganta Guha.india Updated: Jan 11, 2006 20:15 IST
Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta is known to make very stylish and action-packed movies. Zinda, which releases this week, is his latest offering with Sanjay Dutt and John Abraham in the lead. HT City caught up with the director.
Another action packed film from Sanjay Gupta?
I wouldn’t call it an action film. It is an intense drama about the extremes human beings can go to. There is an undercurrent of action in the film. It is my darkest film ever — a reflection of my own frame of mind.
What about the use of colour?
The colour in my films has got to do with the subject be it in Kaante or Musafir. In Zinda, I wanted to add some texture and used a stark colour. I wanted to give an edgy look to the film. If it had been possible, I would have made it in black and white. It has also been shot in 16 mm.
You portray Sanjay Dutt differently in the film.
He is the pillar of the film and has given the best performance of his career in Zinda. He will come to be known as a serious actor after Zinda. The film will also change John’s image. He is the surprise package of the film. He has been known as a good-looking hunk with a tremendous fan following but I have found him to be an incredible actor.
What about the music?
It was very difficult to score music for the film as there is no conventional song-and-dance sequence. I was worried about whether the audience will accept it. But the music has turned out to be unique. It is getting rave reviews and is also selling well.
Zinda clashes with Rajkumar Santoshi’s Family. Is this a clash of titans?
They are the titans, we are bachchas (with a laugh). I am not at all apprehensive as somebody will watch my film one day and the other some other day. Family has its target audience, we have ours.
You are holding five premieres for the film — another stylish marketing ploy?
We are starting off with a fashion show with the cast in Mumbai on the 10th. On the 11th it is the Mumbai premiere. Zinda is also the opening film at the Pune International Film Festival on the 12th. Then we move to Delhi on the 13th, Chandigarh on the 14th and Ahmedabad on the 15th.
A stylish holiday. I need it desperately!
