L.K. Advani quit as BJP president on Saturday in line with his pledge to go after the Mumbai convention, but made it clear that he was certainly not contemplating sanyas.

Announcing Rajnath Singh’s elevation as the new BJP president, Advani said he expected the party to still utilise his services. He added that he would leave it the new party chief to decide what role he should play, apart from his role as the Leader of Opposition. “Even when I was not president, my face had some use for the BJP,” he said.

Singh will get a year from now but can also look forward to a full term of three years if the party desired when regular polls are held, Advani said. Singh will formally assume charge at BJP headquarters in New Delhi on January 2.

Advani dismissed the flutter over A.B. Vajpayee’s description of him as “Ram” and Pramod Mahajan as “Laxman” as an indication of the pecking order. “I was sitting by Vajpayee's side, so was Mahajan. Hence, he called us so. There is no significance.”
