THE TENOR and tone of the Rashtriya Lok Dal member Munna Singh Chauhan in the Vidhan Parishad has completely changed after his removal from the State Cabinet.
Chauhan, who was holding the irrigation portfolio, had resigned on the instruction of the party high command to pave the way for Dr Mairajuddin Ahmad, on March 4. A belligerent Chauhan repeatedly got up to pin down the government during the Question and Zero Hours, on Friday.
While Treasury Bench members looked at him with consternation, his supplementaries were music to the ear of the Opposition. He raised the issues which even forced the chairman Chaudhury Sukh Ram Singh Yadav to say: “jaab se kursi chhodi kafi tezi aagai hai (ever since he has resigned, he had gained speed).
Though an ally of the ruling SP, Chauhan shot off the issues related to Cooperative Movement, farmers’ problems and empowerment of a three-tier Panchayati Raj, to embarrass the government. While as a minister Chauhan was always on the forefront to defend the government, the loss ministry had completely transformed him.
The RLD had sacrificed him to play minority card in western UP. The induction of Dr Ahmad as irrigation minister in his place was aimed at retaining the party’s dwindling base in western UP. Though Chauhan had made considerable efforts to widen the party base in eastern UP, the leadership had veered round to the view that it was still not in a position to make electoral gains in Poorvanchal. This logic went against Chauhan and the party had again fallen back on western UP.
While SP minister Haji Yaqoob Quereshi has been making waves after announcing a reward on the head of the Danish cartoonist, the RLD could ill-afford to turn away its eyes from the prevailing situation in western UP. Thus, Dr Mairajuddin Ahmad was chosen in place of chauhan. There were other MLAs in the party hankering for ministership but RLD high command opted for Dr Ahmad who is not a member of either House in the Assembly.
