Apropos of the editorial A grey area (July 20), the days ahead for the elderly who are dependent on their children are bleak. The story of a 75-year-old woman who was thrown onto a garbage heap in Tamil Nadu is a grim portent of the plight of senior citizens. It is the responsibility of the State to ensure a dignified living for older people.

The report is shocking and painful. This shows how our society is deteriorating in terms of sensitivity, emotion and duty towards elderly people. Elderly people are the foundations of a family.

The scale of violence in Pakistan must have surprised Musharraf. Now there is no turning back for him as he has been driven up a one-way street with no escape routes. The coming days may see some tough measures, including imposing emergency or martial law. In this scenario, he may welcome tactical help from America.
