“All these air hostesses were grounded three to four years back and they haven’t flown since then,” said an Air India spokesman.

“They have been sacked because our medical board has declared them permanently unfit for carrying out their duties,” he said.

The hostesses, who were all serving on domestic routes, were already grounded and were only served final termination notices last week.

The official said they were given sufficient opportunity to reduce their weight to the acceptable standards. Sources said the sacked employees were offered alternate jobs which they refused to take up.

Some airhostesses had approached the Delhi High Court earlier. However, the court dismissed their petition.
