Activists of Shiromani Akali Dal would stage a day-long protest in front of the Parliament on May 17 and would submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister to press upon their demand for waiving off Rs 24,000 crore loans of peasantry in Punjab.
In the memorandum, the SAD would urge the Centre for setting up of a 'farmers rescue fund' with 50 per cent of its share so that farmers could be adequately financed during natural calamities, SAD Chief Prem Singh Chandumajra said.
He said that it was not possible for farmers to return such a huge amount of loan and said that the increasing number of suicides was due to this reason.
He rejected the Rs 10 per quintal hike of sugarcane price to Rs 125 per quintal by the Punjab Government and demanded least Rs 150 per quintal.
He also rejected the announcement of Rs 50 as bonus on wheat and demanded at least Rs 100 per quintal hike in Minimum Support price.
