He said Akhilesh had the knack of understanding problems faced by farmers, labourers and unemployed youth. He was dedicated to the cause of development, Halim added.

He was expressing his views as the chief guest in a programme at Maulana Azad Inter College.

Halim said whenever Congress came to power, issues like the minority character of Aligarh Muslim University were raised to divert the attention of the minority community from basic problems.

He alleged that the Congress treated Muslims as a mere vote bank and added that the community paid no attention to the party in UP.

He also said no university for the minorities was set up after Independence. And when the Samajwadi Party took the initiative to establish a university in Rampur in the name of freedom fighter Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar, the Congress created hindrances. He pointed out that a Bill for setting up the university was still pending at Governor House.

Stressing the need for promotion of education among the minorities, Halim said the State Government had taken landmark decisions in promotion of education.

He cited the Kanya Vidya Dhan Yojna in this regard.

He further said appointment of 40,000 B.Ed graduates as assistant teachers and 90,000 Shiksha Mitras at government primary schools would resolve the shortage of primary school teachers.

Enumerating the achievements of the party, he said the Planning Commission had appreciated the government’s commitment to providing free education and distribution of scholarship. On its part, the World Bank had diverted funds allotted to other States to UP for promotion of basic education in the State.

Halim said he was the election incharge of Akhilesh Singh Yadav in Kannauj. After being elected as MP, Akhilesh had launched various development projects there.

He said earlier no elected people’s representative from Aligarh was given a Cabinet berth. It was Chief Minister Mulayam Singh who inducted him into the Cabinet to give representation to Aligarh, he added.

He called upon community members to focus on improving their education status, which was “the key to success”. He quoted teachings of the Prophet in support of his appeal.

Former MLC and SP leader Devendra Pratap Singh stressed the need to link education with technology to resolve unemployment problems.
