Amarnath pilgrimage to commence on June 29

The annual pilgrimage to the revered Amarnath cave shrine in South Kashmir Himalayas will commence on June 29 in 2011 and will conclude on August 13.

In 2011 the yatra has been curtailed by 10 days compared to last year's period of 56 days, a spokesman of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board said in Jammu.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the Shrine Board, chaired by Jammu and Kashmir governor N N Vohra in Delhi, he said.

Vohra is also the chairman of the Amarnath Shrine Board.

In 2010, the annual Amarnath pilgrimage had begun on June 30 and culminated on August 24.
