Guevara first gained international attention when she won 400m gold at the 1999 Pan Am Games and is the overwhelming favourite to win the 400m in Athens and could become Mexico’s first female medalist in Olympic track and field. In 2002, she emerged as the world's top 400m runner and one of the most dominant athletes. She broke the 50-second barrier seven times in 2002.

In 2003 she ran 48.90second to claim gold in the eighth fastest time in history.

She is considered her country's greatest track and field athlete.
