PROF M Anandakrishnan has been appointed chairman, Board of Governors, of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, for a three-year period. He replaces Prof CN Rao, whose term expired recently.

One of the founder members of IIT-K, Prof Anandakrishnan is at present chairperson of the Madras Institute of Development Studies.
Recipient of the Padmshree award, Prof Anandakrishnan was a senior professor and Head of Department of Civil Engineering at IIT, Kanpur, from March 1963 to May 1974.
The distinguished educationist was also the Science Counsellor, Embassy of India, in Washington DC, USA from June 1974 to April 1978. He has also served the United Nations Centre for Science and Technology for Development (UNCSTD) as deputy director, senior officer, chief of new technologies section and secretary to the Advisory Committee on Science & Technology for Development. He was also the vice-chancellor of Anna University, Chennai.
A pioneer of the IIT system, Prof Anandakrishnan received the Distinguished Leadership Award from the University of Minnesota, USA, in 2003. In 1996, the President of Brazil awarded him the nation’s highest scientific honour for promoting international co-operation in science and technology.
