Andhra toll 111, search called off

The death toll in Saturday's train accident at Valigonda in Andhra Pradesh has risen to 111 with the recovery of eight more bodies on Sunday. An inquiry, to be conducted by the commissioner of railway safety, has been ordered into the accident.

Meanwhile, the search team, comprising civilian and military personnel including divers from the navy, scoured the submerged bogies

and the adjoining waterlogged areas and retrieved eight bodies, South Central railway Spokesman P Krishnaiah told HT. As many as 103 bodies were recovered on Saturday.

The search operation was called off on Sunday evening after the team had searched all possible places, he said.

So far, 63 bodies have been identified and handed over to the families of the deceased. Meanwhile, the TDP and the BJP on Sunday demanded a judicial inquiry into the accident.
