The Hungarian Olympic team in Athens said Annus had to report for a test on the Austrian side of the border between Hungary and Austria by 4 pm local time, Hungarian news agency MTI reported on Friday.
Annus did not test positive after winning the hammer competition at the Games on Sunday. He then returned home, apparently against regulations, and announced his retirement.
The 31-year-old shared a coach with Hungary's discus gold medallist Robert Fazekas, who was expelled from the Games after refusing to provide a complete urine sample after Monday's final. Fazekas had to return his medal.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Friday they had asked Hungarian officials to find Annus so they could test him again for drugs.
Annus said he had not taken any banned substances.
"My only sin is that I won the Olympic gold," he was quoted as saying by a Hungarian Internet website.
The president of Hungary's Olympic Committee Pal Schmidt earlier told Hungarian radio that Annus had a deadline of 1000 GMT to give the sample or lose his gold medal.
Schmitt also said that the Hungarian Olympic officials had been contacted about a weightlifter, but said he had no further details.
