Another BSP MLA in trouble
Grappling with the fallout of the rape charge against its Naraini MLA, the BSP has been hit by another scandal involving its Bharthana (in Etawah) legislator Shiv Prasad Yadav. A woman has accused Yadav of shielding a man who allegedly raped her.
On January 18, Sonam, a resident of Sanghtiyapur in Ramabai Nagar district, moved a petition in an Etawah court accusing Vinod Awasthi, the principal of Gyansthali School, of raping her on December 16.
Sonam said she lodged a complaint with the police but no action was taken. On December 21, her husband, Ganesh Shankar, a computer teacher in Gyansthali School, committed suicide, she added.
Sonam said she approached the police again, but the police charged her with forcing her husband to commit suicide, lodged an FIR against her and her brothers and put them in jail “under the pressure of the BSP MLA”. The police said Shankar’s father had lodged a complaint blaming Sonam and her relatives for his death. The UP police said they found from Awasthi’s mobile phone records that he was not present at the spot of the alleged rape on December 16.
