According to doctors who performed the surgery, Rahul was being brought up by his parents as a boy till they felt something was wrong with his reproductive organs.
A resident of Sadalpur Lathia village in Varanasi outskirts, the boy’s parents Shivmuni Prasad and Haushila Devi, got him examined in BHU Hospital some time ago.
"During the course of chromosomal analysis which was conducted on the boy we could find that his reproductive organs had not developed properly — without testis,” said Dr Vijendra, who along with Dr AN Ganguly of Department of Pediatrics performed the surgery.
Successful gender change surgery was performed on the boy on Thursday.
Rahul now changed into Riya is admitted in BHU’s Sir Sunder Lal Hospital.
Explaining, Dr Vijendra said that three-and-a-half-hour surgery comprised of Vaginal Exterirasation, clitorial recession and Lavioscrotal reduction, which were performed successfully. “The boy has now successfully turned into a girl,” he said.
It may be noted that on September 6, one 16-year-old girl Sangeeta Kumari Maurya of Varanasi turned into Sangeet Kumar when doctors conducted gender change surgery at a private nursing home.
