Zahid Manhas, SP City South, said, “A suicide note was recovered from the room, in which the deceased said she wanted to leave the world and in fact wanted to leave the army.”

Lieutenant Colonel SD Goswami, PRO, defence, said a court of inquiry had been ordered into the death. Arun Razdan, Megha’s father, was not allowed to speak to reporters.

Last year, Lieutenant Sushmita Chakarvarty had committed suicide at an army camp at Rehmbal near Udhampur. In 2006, 120 suicides were reported in the army. Over 50 soldiers have taken their lives this year.

In Delhi, an army spokesman said, “The suicide rate in the army is far less than the national average. In the army, the rate of suicide is 7.5 per lakh compared to 11.5 per lakh at the national level.”
