Assam: 45 injured as passenger train derails

At least 45 passengers were injured when nine coaches and the engine of a passenger train derailed in Morigaon district, 75km east of Guwahati early on Wednesday.

The train Dn15666 Dimapur – Kamakhya BG Express derailed at Tegheria between Ajuri and Jagiroad railway station. A Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) statement said that the engine and five coaches derailed and 4 coaches capsized.

The injured passengers, around 32, were released after first aid while 18 passengers who suffered major injuries were brought to Guwahati in a special train and admitted at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH).

“Train movements have been affected in Central and Upper Assam after the mishaps. The track restoration works are currently on. We expect train movement in the route from today evening”, said Sugato Lahiri, chief public relation officer of NFR.

Eight trains bound for different location in upper Assam were cancelled for the day. Several long distances trains including Dibrugarh – New Delhi Rajdhani Express were stopped at Guwahati railway station.
