Impressed with its fast rising readership, earnest efforts are now underway to make the magazine available on the book stalls and news stands all over the state which will make 'Bargad' the first ever magazine published by a varsity to compete with commercially published monthlies in the open market.

"We have got a great response to the magazine of which the first issue came out only in February 2006. Today we are sending the magazine by post to readers all over UP and even in many other states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Sikkim, Karnataka, Haryana and Delhi.

The magazine is also being sent to most of the big universities and institutes of mass communication and journalism today," informed Dhananjay Chopra, managing editor of 'Bargad' and a faculty member at the AU Centre of Photojournalism and Visual Communication.

Chopra said that with the reader feedback suggesting that more and more people wanting to read it, the centre has now begun negotiations with owners of news stands and book stalls of Allahabad so as to make it reach more people.

"A list of news-stand and book stall owners of major cities of Uttar Pradesh is being compiled so that talks can begin with them too. The aim is to make the magazine available to even a casual reader standing at a railway station or bus station anywhere in the state," Chopra said.

He said the first challenge fixed for the entire Bargad team is attaining a readership of 5000 copies following which further plans will be charted out.

"The magazine, a brain child of Prof GK Rai, is an effort to see the world from the campus. The idea seems to have clicked and under the guidance of Prof Rai, efforts are now in full swing to cover topics ranging from popular writers, poets to social issues like water scarcity and lack of education," he added.

Chopra said that with senior teachers like Satya Prakash Mishra, AA Fatami, GK Rai, Ajay Jaitley, Shruti Pant functioning as editorial consultants, each issue of the magazine has eight students of our Photojournalism course chosen on merit and rotation to act as the editorial team.

"A special issue of 'Bargad' is now being planned and will come out by September that, we aim to make a collector's issue," he said.
