Snail mail is all set to get a boost. The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi has developed a low-cost, hi-tech 'mail sorter' that could improve the slow mail delivery system of the Indian postal department.

Snail mail is all set to get a boost. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, has developed a low-cost, hi-tech 'mail sorter' that could improve the slow mail delivery system of the Indian postal department.

The gadget, developed by students of the mechanical engineering department at IIT-D can sort mails according to size and then put them in order. The project has cost a meagre Rs 10,000.

The machine has a hand-held turbine that will vibrate the jumbled mails kept in an attached metal box and then push them towards a slope made of tin.
It has three sections to sort postcards in the first, inland letters in the next and finally all envelops in the third stock.

"The postal department had asked for a low-cost machine. We are going to invite them now for a demonstration,” said Sunil Kale, a senior professor of the department.
