Bajuban Riyan held a long stint as a member of the Tripura Legislative Assembly from 1967 onwards and became the Member of the Public Accounts Committee and the estimates committee.

Between May and December 1977, Riyan was the Minister of the Animal Husbandry of Tripura. Between 1978-79 Riyan became the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Co-operation and Fishery of the state. Soon after in 1980, he was elected to the 7th Lok Sabha. In 1985, he was re-elected to 8th Lok Sabha for the second term even as he became the Deputy Leader, CPI (M) Parliamentary Party, Lok Sabha.

Between 1985-86 he was the member of the committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and then a member of the House Committee Consultative Committee, Ministry of Home Affairs Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Welfare. In 1996 he was re-elected to 11th Lok Sabha for the third term and in 1996-97 he became a member of the Committee on Agriculture and soon after, the Member of the Committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Member, Consultative Committee and Ministry of Welfare.

In 1998, he was re-elected to the 12th Lok Sabha. Apart from several membership portfolios, in 1999, he was re-elected to 13th Lok Sabha and in 1999 he again became the member of the Member of the committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Member, Committee on Food, Civil Supplies and Public Distribution. Year 2000 onwards he has been the member of the Consultative Committee, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. He was arrested twice under Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during emergency and pre-emergency period and detained in jail without trial for two years between 1974-76.
