It is expected that the centre, which will be ready by the next year, will be able to get funds from industries and other agencies. According to the Institute authorities, the centre will generate funds by licensing the patents acquired for the developed technologies.

A leading industrial house has already shown interest in collaborating with the IIT-K in the area of water and environmental pollution. The centre is being set up with the MP Local Area Development (MPLAD) Fund of Arun Shourie who has given Rs 11 crore for the centre. The proposed centre will have ten laboratories and many other facilities in various disciplines of research in environmental science and engineering.

The centre of the building will be unique. The building will be designed in such a way that it will be energy efficient. It will have several special features, like insulated walls, ceiling and window glasses, reflective terrace, earth-air tunnel and water body on the north side of the building.

Besides, the building will have rain water harvesting facility, water efficient sanitary fixtures, energy efficient electrical fixtures, eco friendly refrigerant for air conditioning. There will be many other features in the building.

These energy efficient features will reduce the impact on the environment by reducing consumption of electricity, water demand, air conditioning load and other energy requirements.

The engineers involved in constructing the building said that they would have to fell several trees to clear the place for construction.

They said that after the completion of the building, a large number of trees would be planted at the site.
