District Magistrate Srinagar Mehraj Ahmed Kakroo, under section 144 CrPC, imposed the ban on sale, purchase, stitching or use of the army uniform throughout the territorial jurisdiction of the district, an official spokesman said in Srinagar on Sunday.

Kakroo also imposed a ban on painting the civilian vehicles in army colour, he said, adding that the ban shall remain in force for six months from May 27, 2011.

Although no reason was assigned for the ban, the official said the move was to prevent misuse of army insignia by militants, who have used these things in the past to launch suicide attacks on security installations.
