Bandh, rallies affect normal life in Manipur

Sit-in-protests were reported from interior areas of Manipur on Friday to press for withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act even as a 12-hour bandh affected normal life in parts of Imphal East district, official sources said.

Sit-in-protests, dharnas and rallies were reported from Herok, Tentha in Thoubal district and Oinam and Moirang areas in Bishenpur district, the sources said.

Apunba Lup, the apex body of 32 organisations spearing the ongoing stir, has given a call for a "mass sit-in-protest" on Friday to press for removal of the act.

The sources said security was beefed up in view of the proposed mass sit-in-protest on Friday.

Normal life was affected at Itham and Moirangpurel areas in Imphal East district in view of a 12-hour bandh beginning 6 am on Friday and was called by local clubs to press for withdrawal of the act.
