"The bank management has been advised by the deputy chief labour commissioner to discuss the issue with unions before pursuing the merger issue with the Reserve Bank of India and the central government," said C H Venkatachalam, general secretary of All India Banks' Employees Association (AIBEA).

He said the unions had decided to defer the strike after the SBI management accepted the labour commissioner's advice.

The boards of State Bank of Indore and SBI had given their green signal for the merger last month.
