Warning that lawyers should never come in the way of delivery of justice, Justice Raveendran warned that if the confidence of the people in the judiciary was weakened, the lawyers too would be sufferers as in that case the people would not like to approach the court and would adopt some illegal dispute redressal system. Further, that would not be good for the society as well.
Justice Raveendran narrated several qualities which a lawyer should possess so as to build the confidence of the people in delivery of justice system. First of all, they should help in speedy justice as “every delaying tactic adopted by lawyers helps in destroying the system”.Secondly, they should raise the performance level of the Bar. “When the lawyers take a case for income and not for giving relief, the problem starts’’, said Raveendran.
Thirdly, they should inculcate discipline and avoid adjournments. Besides, legal education must be more exhaustive and ‘there should also be some restriction on the entry into the legal profession so as to raise its standard’, he said.
“For a lawyer, service should be the motto and the money should be incidental.
Therefore, they should not take this profession as business,” he said. He urged the lawyers to make access to justice easy and proper. He also asked the lawyers to protect the image of the judicial system because according to him “a system works because of confidence of the people in the system. We survive only because the system is respected. It is in the hands of the lawyers to boost the confidence of the people in the judiciary’’, Raveendran said.
Lawyers should be true to their profession, he said. “If the Bar loses integrity, where will the other professions go?’’, he questioned. He advised the lawyers to never become a party to subvert the law. “We are not here to win a case by hook or by crook, but to win it only on merit’’. Lastly, he said that lawyers should endeavour to make the laws just.
The welcome address was given by Justice AK Yog, a senior judge of the Allahabad High Court.
