Beant Singh case: convict gets life imprisionment

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today commuted the death sentence of Jagtar Singh Hawara, a top Babbar Khalsa militant and prime convict in the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, to life imprisonment. Sanjeev Verma reports.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday commuted the death sentence of Jagtar Singh Hawara, a top Babbar Khalsa militant and prime convict in the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, to life imprisonment.

The Court however upheld the death sentence of Balwant Singh who was convicted by the Special CBI Court in Chandigarh for his role in killing Beant Singh and 15 others by a human bomb in front of Punjab Civil Secertariat here on August 31, 1995.

A division bench comprising Justice Mehtab Singh Gill and Justice Arvind Kumar also upheld the life sentence proounced on three other convicts Gurnam Singh , Lakhwinder Singh and Shamsher Singh.

While Hawara is undergoing sentence in the Chandigarh jail, Balwant Singh and others are lodged in the high-security jail at Patiala.
