What sparked off this interest in Gemmology?
After completing a graduation degree in Computer Applications from the Institute of Management Studies, Noida, I took up other related courses like JAVA and C++. But somehow I did not want to enter this field. Being born into a family of jewellers, the dazzle of diamonds had always lured me and I wanted to learn more about them. De Beers was spending aggressively on diamond advertisements and people were showing a lot of interest in these beautiful stones. With so much hype around, I knew it would be a safe bet to enter the Gemmology industry.
What course did you pursue before entering this field?
I did a four-month diploma course in Gemmology from IDI, Surat. I became a certified gemmologist after the completion of this programme. I also did a certificate course in polished diamonds from a private institute and got an A+ grade there. I underwent practical training in one of the biggest diamond factories, where I actually saw how a rough diamond is transformed into a polished one.

What is the scope of Gemmology in India?
Gemmology can be a lucrative career option. After all, India is one of the biggest consumers of gold, silver, diamonds and other precious stones. We consider jewellery to be not only an item of fashion but also a form of investment.
Tell us something about your present business.
Our company, Sunmatee Jewellers, was established in 1981. My father was an experienced jeweller and he helped me understand the current trends. My family's experience and my knowledge in modern technology proved effective and within a year of my joining the business, our products have been well accepted in the global market.
