Beli Hospital starts CT Scan facility

THE TEJ Bahadur Sapru (Beli) Hospital has given a ray of hope to thousands of poor patients, suffering from lung cancer, cysts or abscesses and were forced to spend all their meagre income to get costly tests done at the private diagnostic centres.

After waiting for almost one-and-a-half year, the region's first CT (computed tomography) Scan unit has started at the Beli Hospital.
The Beli has also become the first government hospital in the region, to provide CT Scan and other advance diagnostic and pathology services to patients.
The Beli Hospital got the CT Scan unit about one-and-a-half years back, at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore. The unit was installed in March 2006, but in the absence of radiologist and trained technicians it could not be made functional.
The hospital administration gave a proposal to the MLN Medical College professors to prepare CT Scan test report, so that poor patients could be benefited.
But, there was no headway. However, with the posting of a trained CT Scan Radiologist Dr Rakesh Pathak about two months back, the hospital finally decided to start the unit.
"Since it started about one-and-a-half month back, we conducted five CT Scan of patients. The cost of each CT Scan is just Rs 799, which is much less than CT Scan conducted at the private centres," said Dr RB Singh, chief medical superintendent of the hospital.
Dr Singh said it was unfortunate that CT Scan unit worth Rs 1.5 crore remained idle for several months due to the absence of doctors and trained staff. "But now, the patients suffering from infection, tumours, kidney stone, liver cancer, enlarged prostate and other liver diseases can be treated well at the hospital with the accurate diagnosis by CT Scan," he added. He said the hospital had also started advance pathology tests at the regional diagnostic centres at minimum rates. Some of them include cardiac profile like LDH, cholesterol, LDL at Rs 248, liver profile like bilrubin, urea, globulin, total protein at Rs 104, renal profile like creatinine at Rs 100, diabetic profile at Rs 76, hematology test at Rs 100, general medical profile at Rs 129, arthritis profile at Rs 184 and pre-surgical profile Rs 407. We are planning to run these services all the 24-hours.
Solar water heating system
THE BELI Hospital is all set to start the solar water heating system for its emergency and operation theatres. "Each solar water heating unit with a capacity of 300 litres will be installed at Eye OT, General OT and Emergency Block to get warm water round the clock. This is probably the first government hospital to get this facility," said Dr RB Singh.
Surgery camp
AS MANY as 85 patients from Soraon were registered at the mega IOL surgery camp at the Beli Hospital on Thursday. A team of four doctors conducted as many as 41 IOL surgeries by afternoon. The patients were also provided free food, milk and other medicines at the camp.
Beli Hospital chief medical superintendent Dr RB Singh said the camp was part of National Programme For Control of Blindness.
"It was scheduled at Soraon, but since we were unable to provide quality services to patients there, we decided to bring patients at the Beli Hospital for surgery.
This is the second mega IOL camp in the year.
The IOLs are also conducted on every Thursday and Saturday," he added.
The surgeons' team included Dr Mahendra Pratap, Dr Ram Sajeevan, Dr Saroj Kumar and Dr Prabodh Kumar.
