THE STATE recorded a whopping figure of 9,636 rapes and molestations in the bygone year that on average translates into either a rape or molestation every 54 minutes in Madhya Pradesh.
The year 2005 witnessed 2,835 cases of rapes and 6,801 cases of molestations. Although an incredible figure at first glance but the State does not have a good record as far as crimes against women are concerned.
While the number of rapes (2,835) recorded in 2005 was slightly less than 2004 when it stood at 2,875, the number of molestations went up from 6,690 to 6,801. Crime in India 2004 had placed Madhya Pradesh at the top of all States in both cases of rapes and molestations. No wonder the figure of rapes and molestations has gone up from 9,565 to 9,636.
The latest Crime in India report had also revealed that Madhya Pradesh accounted for 16 per cent of all recorded rapes in the country and nearly 20 per of molestations.
Ignominious enough but more as the number of rapes registered in the State were almost twice the number of such crimes recorded in West Bengal that stood at second place with Uttar Pradesh third on the list.
As far as district-wise figure is concerned in the State in the year 2005, Betul leads with 136 rapes in the bygone year followed by Dhar (134), Sagar (110) and Chhindwara (101). In the year 2004, Sagar had the distinction with 141 rapes, Chhindwara (125), Betul (110) and Dhar (109). As far as molestations are concerned, Sagar leads with 386 cases followed by Jabalpur (310) and Indore (294). In 2004 also Sagar had led with 366 cases of rapes.
