A woman is fighting for her life in hospital after her husband allegedly assaulted and set her ablaze at their Bhandup residence.

The couple, Shankar (40) and Bharti Naidu (35), married since 2000, were said to have had problems over dowry right from the start of their marriage.

The police said a heated exchange had occurred between the two when Shankar, a marine engineer, came home drunk and abused Bharti in front of their seven year-old daughter, and led to the incident on December 28. Bharti was rescued by neighbours, who took her to the National Burns Institute, Airoli, after the incident, which was revealed to the authorities on Friday.

The police were on Saturday still looking for Shankar, absconding since the night of the incident. With 60 per cent burns, a critical Bharti is in the intensive care unit.
