Following directions from a local court, the Shirur police in Pune district booked minister for public works department (PWD) Chhagan Bhujbal and 21 others on Wednesday for alleged illegal toll collection on the Pune-Ahmednagar highway. Bhujbal, however, denied any wrongdoing.

The first information report (FIR) was filed after local activist Sanjay Pachange approached the Shirur court with documentation allegedly showing irregularities in toll collection, following which the court directed the police to file a complaint on Friday.

The others against whom the FIR has been filed include the secretary and executive engineer of the public works department, and Sunil Raisoni, director of Ashoka Buildcon, the firm which constructed the bridge along the highway on Krishna river, and now mans the toll collection centre at Shirur, 70km from Pune city.

AD Kshirsagar, inspector of Shirur police station, told HT over the phone: “We have registered the FIR on court’s directions. We will investigate the matter and submit a report to the court.”

The police have registered the case under 25 sections of Indian Penal Code, including 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating).

Meanwhile, Bhujbal told a Marathi news channel: “The toll collection policy is in accordance with central guidelines. However, if someone points out flaws in the policy, we are ready to correct them.”
