The court also slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 each and three-year sentences under the Arms Act on them. If they don’t pay the amount, they will have to spend an extra year in jail.

The MP’s counsel, Mansoor Alam, told mediapersons: “As soon as a copy of the judgment is made available, we will move the Patna High Court against the judgment of the lower court,” he said.

Another accused, Pappu Singh, is facing trial separately. Two others, Suro Singh and Shanker Singh, were killed in a police encounter some time after the case came up.

Surajbhan is the third serving member of the current Lok Sabha from Bihar — after RJD’s Mohammed Shahabuddin and Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu — to be handed a life sentence for murder. At least seven cases, including three murder cases, are pending against him in different courts of Begusarai.
